Ryan's story

Ryan was diagnosed with Stage 4 High Risk Neuroblastoma N-MYC amplified in July 2008. He was out of treatment for just over a year when in November 2010 our lives were again turned upside down when we discovered the disease had returned in his bones and bone marrow. After a year of treatment re-staging scans in November 2011 showed that he had again achieved remission.

However just 3 months later, in February 2012, end of treatment scans gave us the devastating news that the disease has returned, this time with a tumour near his spine. In March Ryan started 4 weeks of radiotherapy followed by chemotherapy. Re-staging scans in May and August showed no evidence of disease. On the 4th September 2012 Ryan received treatment in Tubingen for a haplo-identical stem cell transplant. He is a happy, active boy who is now enjoying life to the full.

Thank You

Thank you to everyone that has donated to Ryan's Appeal either on Justgiving, by arranging an event, attended an event or for contributing to one.  There is so much planning involved and we really do appreciate the time and effort that goes into each and every event.
On this page are details of past events, an update written after the event and a total of money raised where appropriate.  At the bottom of the page there are photo's and sometimes words written by the event organiser.  It is great to hear your account of the events so please get in touch so that I can update this page.  I am aware that there have also been lots of private events that have taken place that we are not even aware of and these are just as important to us.
It means so much to us that you are helping us raise the money to give Ryan the best chance of beating Neuroblastoma.  Thanks also to all of our friends and family who are actively thinking of ways to fund raise and are busy behind the scenes spreading the word and giving up their spare time to raise awareness of Ryan's appeal.

The Brewery, Cheltenham
Written by Sue Edwards:
Gill, Hannah, Ben and Jen - Cake Sale at The Brewery, Cheltenham

Ben from Play Farm and Hannah from The Brewery in Cheltenham kindly arranged an event for Ryan`s appeal.  They laid on face painting and a bouncy castle.  I got a raffle together, arranged for friends to bake cakes and hijacked 5 friends to help on the day.  We raised a total of £631.87.

I would like to say a massive thank you to all those who baked (and bought) and to those very generous people who donated raffle prizes.  We had a wonderful response: a signed cook book from Jamie Oliver, a Spa day for two from Calcot Manor, a Shiatsu treatment from Lida Vlcek, a cut and blow dry from Stuart Holmes and one from Sean at Spargo, Cheltenham Festivals membership for one year, DAB radio from Argos, meal for two from Brasserie Blanc, pasta machine from Lakeland, one months membership and nutrition book from Fitness First, childrens books and learning games from Waterstones, Disney gardening kits from Scarlett at ATC Flooring, oven gloves and tea towels from Cath Kidston, £50 cash prize from socialwilliams.com, entry tickets from Slimbridge Wetlands Centre, Cotswold Wildlife Park, Cotswold farm Park and Cotswold Country Park.
People have been very generous and it is thanks to Ben at Play Farm and Hannah at the Brewery that we were able to run this event.

I finished off by selling raffle tickets at a friends cream tea event (held in the rain and on the first day of The Olympics).  Heather and Bernie (our hosts) raised in excess of £600 for Ryan`s Appeal.  My helpers and myself sold rain sodden raffle tickets and wrist bands - £114.  People are amazing and so very generous

Paul Gidney's South Downs Marathon – 9th June 2012

A final update from me - I did it! That is I completed the South Downs Marathon. My time was 4hours 35mins, which I believe is just outside Olympic qualification time (well about double the time needed), but better than I expected. Of the 1100 people who registered to start about 550 finished, best time was a little over 3 hours, slowest time was over 7 hours. I actually quite enjoyed the whole event and may do another in the future, but I won't be quite so public about it so if I do change my mind I can just claim it was never really my intention.

A huge thank you to Mike Shepherd (who was 1 second faster than me), it would have been a lot harder without his support during the race and also to my family for coming to watch and cheer us on at the 17 mile marker and for the constant support during the weeks of training leading upto the event. Also a thanks to Dave Barby for getting us to the start on-time - sadly Dave was not able to participate in the marathon as he has more sense.

The whole point of this was to raise funds to help my nephew Ryan and thanks to your generosity the sponsorship total is now over £1700. Thanks once again to all of you for your generosity and one last nudge for anyone who has not yet sponsored me - for me this small trial is over, but for Ryan there is still a very long way to go, he is certainly doing all he can and more than anyone could expect to beat this terrible disease, but he needs your support.

Kate and Alice Butler's sponsored walk 22nd April 2012

As you know Alice and I organised a sponsored walk on Sunday 22nd April. We walked along the grand western canal from the canal basin to the end of the swans neck (in halberton) and back again, which was an 9 mile walk. There was a group of 16 people which included some of our friends and family.

Unfortunately it was tipping down with rain and very windy on this day, however everyone still turned up and walked the full 9 miles (even nan).  Everyone who took part managed to get sponsored and all together we raised £1047!

'DAN HAMBLY'S FULL BODY WAX 28TH APRIL2012'
By Victoria Hambly

Share Dan's pain on YouTube

Saturday 28th April 2012, what a day!!!! The day started very rainy and horrible and we hoped that this would see more people join us for Dan's full body wax at 'Head of Hair and Beauty', Birchy Barton, Exeter
By 10.30am, as most people witnessed, Dan was getting a little anxious with what pain he was about to subject himself too! (I think we all were a little nervous for him too, I know I was).

Once at the salon we had the chance to meet Brian (Ryan's Grandad) which was fantastic and he was over whelmed by what Dan was going to put himself through for his grandchild, so he decided that he would have a taster of the waxing himself, so then Luan & Emma proceeded to wax a strip on his arm....... I think he then realised just exactly what Dan was about to endure!

So the waxing began and it was a good job that Dan had been provided with a 'Swear box' as this saw a few £1 within a short space of time, Dan feels that the chest and lower leg waxing wasn’t so bad but the pain was about to get worse once on the upper inside leg. Just in the nick of time Ryan's Dad Gareth joined us with a heart-warming video message from Ryan which spurred Dan on even further. Once legs complete they started on his back, the pain of the back was felt by all watching so much so that Dan ended up having to bite on a stick, which if you have had chance to see any pictures I think you may feel the pain too. (There is a link to YouTube on the right of the screen and you can see for yourself!) After the back a well-deserved drink was in order, along with a shave of Dan's beard so that you can see the real difference from a hairy man to what resembled a 'plucked chicken' as Dan quoted himself. By this time I guess most people would have thought we had finished subjecting Dan to anymore pain BUT no we had other ideas!!!

During a well-deserved break for Dan, Gareth kindly helped us with our raffle which raised well over £500 in its self, with gifts donated by local companies. But before Gareth left we were all still deciding how we were to get Dan to have an eyebrow waxed off....... so within the salon between us we got £50 together, but Dan refused and tried to call for help. Julie, Ryan's mum, then offered £100 for us not to subject Dan to anymore pain, but unfortunately we were having an eyebrow no matter what, so we soon raised £160 for one eyebrow (which I think most people would agree is a pretty good price) Dan on the other hand is not so sure, but you can say it is going to be a talking point for the next couple of weeks and therefore hopefully it will help us to raise even more money for the 'Ryan Edwards Appeal'.

All in all it was a fantastic day, had by all that joined us, including Gareth and Brian, which really did put the whole day into perspective of why we were all there to raise much needed money for a VERY BRAVE little boy. We are really grateful for the support we have received for this event raising so far £2354.29 which we  hope will continue once more people see the photos. Update - Total now stands at £2,613.32!

Port Talbot Jet Ski Lake - Competition Saturday 7th April

Firstly we want to say a massive thank-you to Matt; Liz, Dan and Dave from Worldwide Watersports plus Paul and everyone from the South Wales Jet Ski Club for their hospitality, help and support.

The original competition on the beach was cancelled last minute due to lack of waves but the guys at Worldwide Watersports stepped in and organised a competition on the lake so all of us who had made plans and booked accommodation etc didn’t lose out.

I had obtained a permit from Port Talbot council do to a collection for Ryan’s Appeal on the beach so the guys at the lake kindly agreed that Hannah and I could do it there instead. Every-one paid to use the lake and enter the competition, even members who didn’t need to. All of the money was donated to us, along with the sales of tea, coffee, chocolate and crisps etc. Plus we had donations from the skier’s families and friends and others who had just come from the local town to watch. Paul from the South Wales Jet Ski Club even took a collection bucket and poster to Bro’s CafĂ© for us.

The photographer, Ken, was also making a film of the event and asked me to do a piece for the appeal, don’t think I’ll be giving up the day job any-time soon but it was quite fun.

The day itself was quite cold although the sun did try and break through. The competition was good to watch and I should mention that Phill was very pleased to come 4th.

We ended up with nearly £500 and then were told in the evening that another local company MPS Education would also like to donate £100! So big thanks to them.
All in all a very enjoyable day was had by all, followed by a meal and night out in Port Talbot.

Thank-you again to everyone who donated

Debbie Matthews

OLYMPIC PARK RUN

On Saturday March 31st I was one of the lucky ‘winners’ of a place in the National Lottery Olympic Park Run.  I ran with the appeals poster on my back so THANK YOU to those who saw it and donated to the fund for Ryan.  Thanks also to those who sponsored me.  Even though it was “only 5 miles”- and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to run in the stadium- it was still hard work for me!

I thought this one would be a ‘walk in the park’, and that was pretty much the speed I was able to sustain and not just because I was taking in the view.   Those of us in the ‘pink’ section at the back of the queue tried not to be too disheartened when we saw the first runners cross the finish line before we had even set off.   So to a rousing performance of Jerusalem we set off (with heavy hearts and questioning the choice of motivational song).  It was a great opportunity to see around the Olympic Park and we were cheered on by the builders still working there.  Eventually – and it did feel like a long time later – we were back in the sights of the Stadium and ‘Chariots of Fire’ blasted out as we finally entered onto the track.  The last 100m was met with the rapturous applause of – well nobody really as most people had gone home!  I saw the clock approaching the hour and suddenly became motivated by time – so it was a sprint finish and a wish that I had incorporated pilates into my training schedule.

So – where did I come? – well, would you believe 5085th out of a field of 5000!!!  Quite an achievement I think – definitely room for improvement and Usain Bolt is safe .... for now.
